How to stop gambling: start with your next decision
You do not have to solve every debt, explain every loss, or promise a perfect year before you can stop the next bet. Start with a plan for today.
1. Decide what stopping means for today
Make the next step specific: no new bets today, no new deposits, and no opening an account on another platform. Write down the situations that usually lead you back: a live game, payday, being alone at night, or trying to recover a loss.
A loss can make another bet feel urgent. Give yourself permission to leave that loss unresolved while you step away. A recovery plan does not need a winning bet to begin.
2. Make the next bet harder to reach
List the apps and websites you actually use, including any prediction markets you turn to when a sportsbook is unavailable. Use each service's current self-exclusion or account-restriction options where available. Read the terms so you understand what happens to account access and existing positions.
Add a device blocker for those apps and sites. On iPhone, WealthLock lets you choose what to put out of reach. Blocking is one layer: include the other devices and accounts you use in your plan.
3. Give essential money a clear job
Write down the bills and everyday costs that need protecting. Ask your bank which gambling-payment controls it offers and what they cover. The NHS guide to gambling-related harm recommends practical barriers, protecting essential bills, and talking with someone you trust.
If debt has become difficult to manage, look for qualified debt support in your country. Avoid treating another wager as a repayment plan.
4. Plan something for the urge itself
Choose a small action in advance: take a walk, call a friend, make a drink, or spend a minute on a breathing or attention exercise. WealthLock's free Pause section gives you something simple to do on your phone while you step away. You can also put the phone in another room.
5. Keep a record you can use
Record the impulses you resisted and, if helpful, the amount you chose not to bet. Set a gambling-free start date that reflects your experience. If you gamble again, use that information to strengthen your plan and restart your streak when you are ready. Your earlier efforts still happened.
6. Bring another person into the plan
You can ask for help before a situation becomes a crisis. A trusted person, a gambling-support organization, or a qualified professional can help you work on the wider pattern. Blocking software supports that work; it cannot establish that someone has stopped gambling.
